In a significant leap towards sustainable business practices, the Killary Adventure Company has proudly achieved the coveted B Corporation certification. This milestone not only underscores the group's unwavering commitment to sustainability but also aligns perfectly with its long-standing efforts to protect and nurture the environment. FIND OUT MORE
Our Killary Adventure Centre building was constructed in 2006 using the latest sustainable techniques available at the time. It was the first building in Galway to have a growing grass roof and reed bed filtration system for wastewater.
Over the years, we have continued to upgrade and retrofit the building with new environmental technology. We have an onsite biomass boiler for heating and hot water using logs sourced in our local forest less than 3km away. We also run a 6kW wind turbine onsite, creating electricity which helps to power our buildings.
We have an on-site recycling centre for use by our business and the local community. All the food waste from our kitchens is turned into compost for use in our polytunnel. We use electric golf buggies on our site and our old and well-worn wetsuits are donated to The Upcycled Movement, who turn them into stylish accessories.
The Killary Lodge, our newest building, was completed in 2018 using intelligent green heating controls and biogas to provide heat and hot water. Earlier this year we installed 8kW solar panels and 10kW battery to help power the lodge.
In 2016, we were honored with the title of ‘Winner of the Best Small Business Category’ at the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland Awards. The following year, in 2017, we received the Small Firms Association of Ireland ‘Best in Ireland’ award for our exceptional sustainability practices. More recently, we were named the 2023 Winner of Sustainable Family Business of the Year an in early 2024, we proudly received the Sustainability Award from the Galway Local Enterprise Office.
These awards along with our B Corporation Certificate are a wonderful recognition of our ongoing environmental programmes, which continue to evolve through much trial and error, with successes and adjustments along the way.
