Trip Highlights: Visit a working mussel fishing boat, Visit Killary Salmon Farm, Visit Killary Sheep Farm & much more.

Suitable for:

All those aged 8+ years and over. Individuals and groups.

What is involved:

The trip starts at our own private pier at Killary Adventure Centre on the shores of Killary Fjord.

We then take you to check for seals on the aptly named 'Inish Roan' or Seal Island in English. From here the journey continues along the northern side of the Fjord in the shelter of Mayo’s highest mountain, Mweelrea.

Next stop will is a working mussel fishing boat where its crew will take you on board and show you how the whole process works from seed to mussel to plate.

History is all around you as you travel along this ancient waterway. Among the more poignant features to be seen are the abandoned famine villages from before the Irish famine of 1845 and the 'lazy bed' potato furrows on the hillsides. Both provide a stark reminder of the harsh landscape that people tried to farm in this area in order to survive.

Coming to the mouth of the Fjord the boat will pull in beside the Killary Salmon Farm on the southern side. You will have ring-side seats to watch the salmon jumping and feeding!

From here the tour continues back along the southern side of the Fjord to the Killary Sheep Farm. This is a traditional, working Connemara sheep farm offering you a unique insight into the life and work of a local farmer. Tom who was born and bred on the farm guides all the tours and with his trusty sheep dogs gives a wonderful experience of the unique farming methods of the hardy Connemara hill farmers.

Finally you will have the chance to taste some of the fresh Killary Mussels you have just seen with a visit to our Rooftop Café back at base. Powered by wind and wood our green energy Adventure Centre is a unique location to sit back on dry land and enjoy the Fjord’s most spectacular views.
